Bleak, desolate, lonely. (fēngyǔ xiāotiáo) refers to a scene where wind and rain intertwine, creating a desolate and bleak atmosphere. Tang Dynasty (唐 [tang]) scholar Cuī Róng (崔融 [cui rong]), in his "Stele for the Temple of the Mother of Qǐ on Mount Song" (〈嵩山啟母廟碑 [song shan qi mu miao bei]〉), wrote: "Visiting the traces in Nüxia Gorge (女峽 [nu xia]), the wind and rain were desolate." In Act 20 of Míng Dynasty (明 [ming]) playwright Tāng Xiǎnzǔ's (湯顯祖 [tang xian zu]) "The Peony Pavilion" (《還魂記 [hai hun ji]》): "Tonight is the beautiful Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋佳節 [zhong qiu jia jie]), yet the wind and rain are desolate."
