非時食 [fei shi shi]—Non-timely eating — [Terminology (術語 [shu yu])] Refers to food eaten at an improper time, specifically eating after midday (日中 [ri zhong]). In the Vinaya (律 [lu]), this is established as a precept (戒法 [jie fa]). Examples include the precept of not eating after noon (不過中食戒 [bu guo zhong shi jie]) within the Eight Precepts (八齋戒 [ba zhai jie]) and the Ten Precepts (十戒 [shi jie]), and the precept of non-timely eating for bhikkhus (比丘戒 [bi qiu jie]). This is generally for the practice of the Buddhist path (佛道修行 [fu dao xiu xing]) to control food desires (節食欲 [jie shi yu]).
