法衣 [fa yi]—Fǎyī—[Zámíng (雜名 [za ming])] A general term for the Sānyī (三衣 [san yi]) (Three Robes). It is called a Dharma Robe because it is made in accordance with the Dharma (應法而作 [ying fa er zuo]). The Shìshì Yàolǎn (釋氏要覽 [shi shi yao lan]) states: "The robes of renunciants (出家者衣 [chu jia zhe yi]) in India (西天 [xi tian]) have regulations (制度 [zhi du]) according to the Vinaya (律 [lu]). As they are made in accordance with the Dharma (應法而作 [ying fa er zuo]), they are called Dharma Robes." The Liùwù Tú (六物圖 [liu wu tu]) says: "They are sometimes called kasaya (袈裟 [jia sha]), daofu (道服 [dao fu]), chushifu (出世服 [chu shi fu]), or fayi." However, in Zen communities (禪林 [chan lin]), the term fayi specifically refers to the golden brocade robe (金襴衣 [jin lan yi]) that symbolizes the authenticity of Dharma transmission (表傳法之信 [biao chuan fa zhi xin]). This robe is worn only during Dharma talks (說法時 [shuo fa shi]), hence it is called fayi. It is the great robe (大衣 [da yi]) with nine (九條 [jiu tiao]) to twenty-five (二十五條 [er shi wu tiao]) strips. 法義 [fa yi]—(fǎyì)—[Term] 法 [fa] (fǎ) refers to the 教法 [jiao fa] (jiàofǎ), which are the teaching texts that can expound. 義 [yi] (yì) refers to the 義理 [yi li] (yìlǐ), which are the principles expressed by the teachings.
