方等時 [fang deng shi]—The third of the five periods of Tiantai 五時教 [wu shi jiao], the eight years from the twelfth to the twentieth years of the Buddha's teaching, i. e. the period of the 維摩經 [wei mo jing], the 金光明經 [jin guang ming jing], and other vaipulya sutras.

方等時 [fang deng shi]—Vaipulya Period — [Term] The third of the Five Periods (五時 [wu shi]) as classified by the Tiantai School (台家 [tai jia]). This period spans eight years, beginning twelve years after the Buddha's enlightenment, during which various Vaipulya sutras, such as the Vimalakīrti Sūtra (維摩經 [wei mo jing]) and the Golden Light Sūtra (金光明經 [jin guang ming jing]), were preached. These sutras are called Vaipulya (方等 [fang deng]) because they embody the meaning of Vaipulya in terms of phenomena/affairs (事方等 [shi fang deng]) among the Three Meanings of Vaipulya (方等三義 [fang deng san yi]).
