反切 [fǎn qiè] [fan qie]—
The ancient method of 切語 [qie yu] (qièyǔ) involved using two characters to determine the pronunciation of a single character. The 上字 [shang zi] (shàngzì), or upper character, shared the initial consonant (雙聲 [shuang sheng]) with the 所切之字 [suo qie zhi zi] (suǒqiè zhī zì), the character being defined. The 下字 [xia zi] (xiàzì), or lower character, shared the rhyme (疊韻 [die yun]) with the 所切之字 [suo qie zhi zi] (suǒqiè zhī zì). The 上字 [shang zi] (shàngzì) determined whether the sound was voiceless or voiced (清濁 [qing zhuo]), while the 下字 [xia zi] (xiàzì) determined the tone (平上去入 [ping shang qu ru]). For example, 東 [dong] (dōng) is defined as 德紅切 [de hong qie] (dé hóng qiè), and 反 [fan] (fǎn) as 甫晚切 [fu wan qie] (fǔ wǎn qiè).
反切:古人切語之法,用二字以求一字之音,上字與所切之字雙聲,下字與所切之字疊韻;上字以定清濁,下字以定平上去入;如「東,德紅切」、「反,甫晚切」。
