發燒 [fā shāo] [fa shao]—
1. A physiological and pathological response, also known as "fever" (发热 [fa re]) or "febrile response" (发热反应 [fa re fan ying]). It refers to the body's thermoregulatory center (神经中枢 [shen jing zhong shu]) setting the body temperature (体温 [ti wen]) to a level higher than the normal range (正常范围 [zheng chang fan wei]) in response to the body's needs. The most common cause (原因 [yuan yin]) of fever (发烧 [fa shao]) is infection (感染 [gan ran]), including bacteria (细菌 [xi jun]), viruses (病毒 [bing du]), and fungi (霉菌 [mei jun]). Cancer (癌症 [ai zheng]), autoimmune diseases (自体免疫疾病 [zi ti mian yi ji bing]), and medications (药物 [yao wu]) are also possible causes.
2. A metaphor for being very prosperous or fervent/frenzied. For example: "The stock market (股市 [gu shi]) has recently caught fever/heated up again" (发烧 [fa shao]).
