法藏比丘 [fa cang bi qiu]—Bhikṣu Dharmākara is the name of Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) Amitābha Buddha (阿彌陀佛 [a mi tuo fu]) during his causal stage of practice when he left home under Lokeśvararāja Buddha (世自在王佛 [shi zi zai wang fu]). The Sūtra of Immeasurable Life (無量壽經 [wu liang shou jing]) refers to him as Dharmākara. The Sūtra of Equal Enlightenment (平等覺經 [ping deng jue jing]) refers to him as Dharmākara (曇摩迦留 [tan mo jia liu]), which is translated as "Treasury of Dharma Jewels" (法寶藏 [fa bao cang]). The Larger Amitābha Sūtra (大阿彌陀經 [da a mi tuo jing]) refers to him as Dharmāka (曇摩迦 [tan mo jia]). The Sūtra of Immeasurable Life also says "acting as Dharma," the Tathāgata Assembly (如來會 [ru lai hui]) says "abode of Dharma," and Mahāprajñāpāramitā Upadeśa, Chapter 50 (智度五十 [zhi du wu shi]) says "heap of Dharma" (法積 [fa ji]). Jiaxiang's Commentary on the Larger Sūtra (嘉祥大經疏 [jia xiang da jing shu]) states: "He is able to accumulate and store the Buddha-Dharma (佛法 [fu fa]), hence he is called Dharmākara (Dharma Treasury)."
