伐冰 [fá bīng] [fa bing]—
(fá bīng) means to cut ice, to chisel and extract ice blocks. In ancient times, only nobles (貴族 [gui zu]) of the rank of Qīng Dà Fū (卿大夫 [qing da fu]) or higher were permitted to use ice (用冰 [yong bing]) for mourning rituals (喪祭 [sang ji]). Therefore, it came to refer to high-ranking officials and aristocrats (達官貴族 [da guan gui zu]). From Hòu Hànshū (《後漢書 [hou han shu]》), Volume 80, Biographies of Literati, Part 1, Huáng Xiāng (黃香 [huang xiang]): "Those who cut ice and enjoy emoluments (食祿之人 [shi lu zhi ren]) do not contend for profit with the common people (百姓 [bai xing])."
