兜率天 [dou lu tian]—Tuṣita Heaven — [Realm Name (界名 [jie ming])] Tuṣita (兜率 [dou lu]), which translates as "contentment" (知足 [zhi zu]), meaning that one knows to be content and to cease pursuing the five desires (五欲境 [wu yu jing]). This heaven dwells in space (依空而居 [yi kong er ju]). Four hundred years in the human realm (人間 [ren jian]) constitute one day and night (晝夜 [zhou ye]) in this heaven. Thus, 144,000 years in the human realm make up one year in this heaven. If the lifespan (壽 [shou]) in this heaven is 4,000 years, then that would be 5.76 billion years in the human realm. 兜率天 [dōu lǜ tiān] [dou lu tian]—
妙足 [miao zu] (Miàozú), 知足 [zhi zu] (Zhīzú). This is a phonetic transliteration of the Sanskrit word Tusita (梵語 [fan yu] Tusita). It is one of the six heavens in the Desire Realm (欲界 [yu jie]). One day and night in this heaven is equivalent to four hundred human years. The heavenly beings (天人 [tian ren]) residing here are entirely luminous, but they have not severed their desires, thus they still belong to the Desire Realm (欲界 [yu jie]). Mahayana Buddhism (大乘佛教 [da cheng fu jiao]) believes that this heaven has an inner court (內院 [nei yuan]) and an outer court (外院 [wai yuan]). The outer court (外院 [wai yuan]) is a heaven of the Desire Realm (欲界天 [yu jie tian]), while the inner court (內院 [nei yuan]) is the Pure Land (淨土 [jing tu]) where Maitreya (隬勒 [ni lei]) resides, and it is the destination sought by followers of Maitreya (彌勒信仰者 [mi lei xin yang zhe]) for rebirth (往生 [wang sheng]). In the Tang Dynasty (唐 [tang]) poem "Answering a Guest" (〈答客說 [da ke shuo]〉) by Bai Juyi (白居易 [bai ju yi]): "The sea and mountains are not where I return; if I return, I should return to Tusita Heaven." It is also translated as "兜率陀 [dou lu tuo]" and "睹史多 [du shi duo]".
