Doṣādhikāra (दोषाधिकार) (lit. “regarding defects”) is the name of the twelfth chapter of the Karmaprakāśa—one of the earliest preserved Sanskrit works on Perso-Arabic (Tājika) astrology authored by Samarasiṃha in the 13th century.—Chapter 12 (doṣādhikāra) is the longest chapter of the work, and is clearly based on Abū Bakr’s extensive list of astrological correlatives for various illnesses. Despite its length, the Karmaprakāśa chapter is only a partial summary of the material in the Kitab al-mawālīd, but the sequence of the material is largely the same, dealing in order with illnesses of the eyes, ears and tongue (including speech defects); hunchbacks; leprosy and other skin ailments; madness and idiocy; epilepsy and sharp pains (the Latin version has paralysis); ailments of the heart, belly and spleen; bilious disease; impotence, genital deformity, sexual misconduct and excessive lust; hemorrhoids and boils; dwarfishness; baldness; bad breath; bodily weakness; broken limbs; injuries to hands and legs; and general methods for determining the parts of the body vulnerable to illness as well as the time of its onset. Particular note may be made of the concept of ‘black bile’, not found in pre-Islamic Indian medicine.
