釘鞋 [dīng xié] [ding xie]—
Shoes (鞋 [xie]) with nails (釘子 [ding zi]) embedded in their soles (鞋底 [xie di]) are of two types (兩種 [liang zhong]): One type is used as rain boots (雨鞋 [yu xie]) during winter (冬天 [dong tian]) when there is ice (冰 [bing]) and snow (雪 [xue]) on the road (路上 [lu shang]), allowing one to walk on muddy (泥濘 [ni ning]) ground without slipping (滑跌 [hua die]). The other type is used for sports (運動 [yun dong]), where the shoe spikes (鞋釘 [xie ding]) penetrate the track (跑道 [pao dao]) during races (賽跑 [sai pao]) to increase running momentum (跑步衝力 [pao bu chong li]). They are also referred to as "丁鞋 [ding xie]" (丁鞋 [ding xie]) or "釘靴 [ding xue]" (釘靴 [ding xue]).
