Difference (between the body and the self) (in Sanskrit: anyatva) refers to one of the “(twelve) reflections” (bhāvanā), according to Śubhacandra’s Jñānārṇava.—By nature, the self is different from the body; it consists of consciousness and bliss, is pure but bound by worldly life. In reality, there is no unity of matter and consciousness but the connection between them, which is like refined gold and the impurities in unrefined gold, is without a beginning. In this world, the body which is material, completely inert and without a soul, becomes confused, through ignorance, with the soul which is formless and mobile. The body consists of a multitude of atoms whereas the soul has the nature of enjoyment, is beyond the senses and consists of knowing. Stupid people are unaware of the difference between the body and the self which can be seen everywhere in the occurrence of birth and death.

Whichever objects attain a connection, in every case they are all different according to their own natures. Think about the fact that children, friends, wives, valuables and wealth have different natures in every respect. A son might become someone different; a father is born as someone else and he is delighted with some other wife. All beings that reside in the cosmos pass from one form to another each with a separate existence. The individual who roams about on the path of bad conduct subject to wrong faith in the cycle of rebirth suffers pain. When they are concerned with the self, which is wise, solitary, supreme and relinquishes all restlessness, they perceive the beauty of liberation.
