電眼 [diàn yǎn] [dian yan]—
An electron tube (電子管 [dian zi guan]). It is a vacuum tube (真空管 [zhen kong guan]) or gas-filled tube (充氣管 [chong qi guan]) containing a light-sensitive material (對光線敏感物質 [dui guang xian min gan wu zhi]). When irradiated by light or radiation, it emits electrons. These electrons are collected by a higher-potential anode (陽極 [yang ji]), forming an electric current. When the anode voltage (陽極電壓 [yang ji dian ya]) remains constant, the magnitude of the current varies with the intensity of the light. It can be used in applications such as control switches, counting devices, alarm systems, and film projection. It is also known as a photosensitive tube (光敏管 [guang min guan]) or phototube (光電管 [guang dian guan]).
