Dhānyadrāhyāyaṇa (धान्यद्राह्यायण).—(so read for ed. °drāyāyaṇa; see the readings of the corrupt mss., some of which sup- port this, the obviously correct reading), pl., name of a brah- manical gotra: Divyāvadāna 635.19. This passage is omitted in two Chin. translations, my colleague Prof. Rahder informs me. Cf. Dhyāna-drāhyāyaṇī, where Chin. seems more favorable to initial Dhā- rather than Dhyā-. It seems that one or the other of these two must be an error, and per- haps Dhānya- should be read in both.

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
