Dhanuḥśrama (धनुःश्रम) refers to a type of training exercise in preparation of ancient Indian martial arts (dhanurveda), as defined in the 11th century Manasollāsa written by Someśvara III.—Apart from wrestling (mallayudha) there were other exercises that were recommended in order to increase physical strength as a preparation to the mastering of martial arts. Dhanuḥśrama was performed performed with the bow: pulling the bow string several times, bending the heavy bow and fixing the string to the bow were all considered heavy exercises.
