得度 [de du]—Dé Dù—[Terminology] Samsara (生死 [sheng si]) is compared to the sea, Nirvana (涅槃 [nie pan]) to the other shore. To transcend samsara and reach Nirvana is called 'du' (to cross over). It means to successfully cross the sea of samsara. The lower section of the Sutra of Immeasurable Life (無量壽經 [wu liang shou jing]) states: "Whatever one wishes, all can attain liberation." The Ekottara Āgama Sutra (增一阿含經 [zeng yi a han jing]) (Chapter 14) states: "When the Buddha first attained Buddhahood under the Bodhi tree, he had this thought: 'Arāḍa Kālāma's faculties are all mature, he should first attain liberation.'" The Sutra of the Buddha's Last Teaching (遺教經 [yi jiao jing]) states: "Those who should be liberated, whether in heaven or among humans, have all already been liberated. Those who have not yet been liberated have also already created the conditions for liberation."

[Ritual] Shaving one's head to become a śrāmaṇera (沙彌 [sha mi]) is called 'dé dù'. This is the cause or condition for attaining liberation, and therefore, the effect is stated within the cause, and it is referred to as 'dé dù'.
