Vyakarana (Sanskrit grammar)
Dāruṇya (दारुण्य).—Explained by the commentators on the Pratisakhya works as दृढत्व (dṛḍhatva) (firmness) or कठिनता (kaṭhinatā) (hardness,) and given as a characteristic of the acute or उदात्त (udātta) tone; cf. आयामो दारुण्यमणुता खस्येत्युच्चैःकराणि शब्दस्य (āyāmo dāruṇyamaṇutā khasyetyuccaiḥkarāṇi śabdasya), T. Pr. XXII.9, quoted in the Mahabhasya on P.I. 2.29, where दारुण्य (dāruṇya) is explained as स्वरस्य दारुणता रूक्षता । (svarasya dāruṇatā rūkṣatā |)

Vyakarana (व्याकरण, vyākaraṇa) refers to Sanskrit grammar and represents one of the six additional sciences (vedanga) to be studied along with the Vedas. Vyakarana concerns itself with the rules of Sanskrit grammar and linguistic analysis in order to establish the correct context of words and sentences.
