盜憎主人 [dào zēng zhǔ rén] [dao zeng zhu ren]—
Thieves (盗贼 [dao zei]) hate that owners (物主 [wu zhu]) set up defenses (防御 [fang yu]) against them, preventing them from acquiring property (财物 [cai wu]). Later, this was used as a metaphor for wicked people (奸邪者 [jian xie zhe]) resenting upright individuals (正直的人 [zheng zhi de ren]). From "Zuo Commentary" (《左傳 [zuo chuan]》), "Fifteenth Year of Duke Cheng" (成公十五年 [cheng gong shi wu nian]): "Originally, every time Bo Zong (伯宗 [bo zong]) attended court, his wife would certainly warn him, saying: 'Thieves hate their master, the people hate their superiors (民惡其上 [min e qi shang]), you like to speak frankly (子好直言 [zi hao zhi yan]), you will surely encounter disaster (必及於難 [bi ji yu nan]).'" From "Book of the Later Han" (《後漢書 [hou han shu]》), "Volume 24, Biography of Ma Yuan" (卷二四 [juan er si]．馬援傳 [ma yuan chuan]): "But Xiao (囂 [xiao]) himself harbored treacherous intentions (姦心 [jian xin]), like a thief hating his master; his feelings of bitter resentment (怨毒之情 [yuan du zhi qing]) were thus directed towards me, your servant (臣 [chen])."
