倒懸之急 [dào xuán zhī jí] [dao xuan zhi ji]—
To tie a person's feet and hang them upside down with their face pointing downwards. It is a metaphor for an extremely difficult and dangerous situation. From Book of the Later Han (《後漢書 [hou han shu]》), Volume 58, "Biography of Zang Hong" (《臧洪傳 [zang hong chuan]》): "I only fear that when the autumn winds stir up dust, Bóguī (伯珪 [bo gui]) will turn his horse south, and Zhāng Yáng (張揚 [zhang yang]) and Fēi Yàn (飛燕 [fei yan]) will combine their forces to cause trouble. The northern frontier will then face the urgency of being hung upside down, and my trusted lieutenants will present memorials requesting to return." From Selections of Refined Literature (《文選 [wen xuan]》), Pān Yuè's (潘岳 [pan yue]) "Elegy for Ma Qiandu" (《馬汧督誄 [ma qian du lei]》): "Cooking wheat for meals, carrying doors to draw water; facing the danger of stacked eggs (累卵之危 [lei luan zhi wei]) and the urgency of being hung upside down." Also written as "倒懸之苦 [dao xuan zhi ku]" (dào xuán zhī kǔ), "倒懸之危 [dao xuan zhi wei]" (dào xuán zhī wēi), or "倒懸捱命 [dao xuan ai ming]" (dào xuán ái mìng).
