dagaḍa (दगड).—m A stone. 2 f A large stone, or a mass of rock, a block. Note. This word and numerous others of the grade (e. g. dagaḍamātī, dhōṇḍā, mātī, śēṇa, jhyāṭa, kapāḷa &c.) are in incessant use as expressing the standard when the talents, acquirements, or possessions of a person are estimated pro nihilo; as tyālā kāya yētēṃ dagaḍa; tyāpāśīṃ kāya mātī. For phrases not occurring below see dhōṇḍā. da0 ucalaṇēṃ To devise a slander against. da0 ucalaṇēṃ- ghēṇēṃ or hātīṃ ghēṇēṃ-phēkaṇēṃ-māraṇēṃ or dagaḍamāra karaṇēṃ To be wild with passion; to be extravagantly furious. Ex. sambhāḷarē cōrā da0 māraśīla implying that the evil with which we falsely charge, or which we simply suggest to, a person, he will surely commit. da0 cahūṅkaḍē ṭākūna pāhaṇēṃ To try every device or expedient; to leave no stone unturned. da0 ṭākūna ṭhāva pāhaṇēṃ-ghēṇēṃ To seek for the bottom or try the depth of. dagaḍākhālīṃ hāta sāmpaḍaṇēṃ or guntaṇēṃ To fall into some painful or confining predicament. dagaḍākhālūna hāta kāḍhūna ghēṇēṃ To draw one's self out of some hard engagement or difficult business. Pr. dagaḍācā dōra hōta nāhīṃ You cannot get blood from a flint. dagaḍācēṃ nāṃva dhōṇḍā dhōṇḍyācēṃ nāṃva dagaḍa Said where a matter is so evident that all discussion of it is superfluous. dagaḍāparīsa īṭa maū (Brick is softer than stone.) Said in ironical softening of a difficulty or hardship but barely surmountable or sufferable, by comparing it with a matter utterly impracticable or intolerable. dagaḍāśīṃ gāṇṭha paḍaṇēṃ in. con. To fall under the mercy of some hard taskmaster, unpaying debtor &c. dagaḍāśīṃ bhāṇḍaṇēṃ To strive or cope with a powerful antagonist, a mighty difficulty, a hard work &c. dagaḍāsa pājhara āṇaṇēṃ (and, as v i -yēṇēṃ-phuṭaṇēṃ-nighaṇēṃ) also, -pānhā āṇaṇēṃ To accomplish one's purposes maugre all natural obstructions and difficulties; to melt a hardhearted or a miserly wretch; to get milk from a flint.
