大保國 [dà bǎo guó] [da bao guo]—
A Chinese opera (戲曲 [xi qu]) repertoire. It is a story play (故事戲 [gu shi xi]) from the Ming Dynasty (明代 [ming dai]). The story narrates that after the death of Emperor Muzong of Ming (明穆宗 [ming mu zong]), the crown prince was young, and Consort Li Yan (李豔妃 [li yan fei]) governed from behind a screen (垂簾聽政 [chui lian ting zheng]). Her father, Li Liang (李良 [li liang]), attempted to usurp the throne, and Consort Li (李妃 [li fei]) also wished to abdicate. Duke Dingguo Xu Yanzhao (定國公徐彥昭 [ding guo gong xu yan zhao]) and Minister of War Yang Bo (兵部侍郎楊波 [bing bu shi lang yang bo]) sternly remonstrated against this in the Dragon and Phoenix Pavilion (龍鳳閣 [long feng ge]), but Consort Li (李妃 [li fei]) remained unrepentant. The ruler and ministers debated and parted unhappily. The play features many singing roles for Sheng (生 [sheng]), Dan (旦 [dan]), and Jing (淨 [jing]) characters.
