麤人 [cu ren]—Rough Person—[Terminology (術語 [shu yu])] A practitioner (行人 [xing ren]) of the Lesser Vehicle (小乘 [xiao cheng]) is called a "rough person," while a practitioner (行者 [xing zhe]) of the Greater Vehicle (大乘 [da cheng]) is called a "subtle person" (細人 [xi ren]). Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa (智度論 [zhi du lun]), fascicle 39, states: "In the Śrāvaka Dharma (聲聞法 [sheng wen fa]), the ten unwholesome paths (十不善道 [shi bu shan dao]) constitute sinful karma (罪業 [zui ye]); in Mahayana (摩訶衍 [mo he yan]), seeing actions performed by body, speech, and mind (身口意 [shen kou yi]) is considered sin. This is because the doer and the seer are all false and delusive (虛誑 [xu kuang]). Thus, rough persons have coarse sins (麤罪 [cu zui]), and subtle persons have subtle sins (細罪 [xi zui])." In the Tiantai (天台 [tian tai]) school's classification of teachings (教判 [jiao pan]), the terms "rough person" and "subtle person" are borrowed. Among the Four Teachings (四教 [si jiao]), those who adhere to the three teachings of Tripitaka, Pervasive, and Distinct (藏通別 [cang tong bie]) are considered rough persons, while those who adhere to the Perfect Teaching (圓教 [yuan jiao]) are considered subtle persons. Shi Qian (釋籤 [shi qian]), fascicle 1, states: "Both subtle persons and rough persons commit errors (犯過 [fan guo]), and from the perspective of their errors, both are called 'both rough people' (俱 [ju])."
