Cittasthāpana (चित्तस्थापन) or “placement of the mind” refers to one of the “nine mental abidings” (i.e., ‘nine stages of training the mind’) connected with śamatha (“access concentration”), according to Kamalaśīla and the Śrāvakabhūmi section of the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra.—Cittasthāpana (Tibetan: འཇོག་པ, sems ’jog-pa) or “placement of the mind” occurs when the practitioner is able to place their attention on the object of meditation, but is unable to maintain that attention for very long. Distractions, dullness of mind and other hindrances are common.
