持律第一 [chi lu di yi]—Foremost in Upholding Discipline — [Miscellaneous Notes] The Ekottara Āgama, Chapter 3, states that among the hundred foremost bhikkhus, Upāli (優婆離 [you po li]) is considered the foremost in upholding the precepts (持戒 [chi jie]). It states: "Bhikkhu Upāli is one who upholds the precepts and discipline (奉持戒律 [feng chi jie lu]) without committing any transgression (無所觸犯 [wu suo chu fan])." The Mahāprajñāpāramitā Upadeśa (智度論 [zhi du lun]), Chapter 2, states: "Elder Upāli (憂波利 [you bo li]). Among the five hundred Arhats (阿羅漢 [a luo han]), he is foremost in upholding the discipline." The Commentary on the Vimalakīrti Sūtra (注維摩經 [zhu wei mo jing]), Chapter 3, states: "Kumārajīva (什 [shen]) says: 'Throughout long nights (長夜誓願 [zhang ye shi yuan]), he vowed to consistently practice upholding the discipline in every life (世世 [shi shi]), which is why he is now foremost in upholding the discipline.'"
