朝不保暮 [cháo bù bǎo mù] [chao bu bao mu]—
It's hard to guarantee safety in the evening if you're safe in the morning. It's a metaphor for a precarious situation. Han Dynasty, Zhu Mu (朱穆 [zhu mu]), "Reply to the Emperor Memorial on Liang Ji (梁冀 [liang ji])": "Some sell their fields and houses, some die under the whip, some harm themselves due to pressing demands. The small and large are helpless, and morning cannot guarantee evening." "First Slaps the Table in Amazement" Volume 20: "And there are those people who, if they are serving the heavenly way, acting as generals on the border, wearing heavy armor, holding spears, cannot rest day and night, and whose lives are precarious (死生 [si sheng])." Also written as "朝不保夕 [chao bu bao xi]" (cháo bù bǎo xī, morning cannot guarantee evening).
