Source: archive.org: Nilamata Purana: a cultural and literary studyChandodeva (छन्दोदेव) refers to a deity that was once worshipped in ancient Kashmir (Kaśmīra) according to the Nīlamatapurāṇa.—Chandodeva is the deity to be worshipped by women only. The Viṣṇudharmottara Purāṇa states that by worshipping him women obtain qualified sons. The Brahma Purāṇa, quoted in the Kṛtyakalpataru, gives the story of his birth from a Brāhmaṇa mother and a Śūdra father, and his association with the Yakṣas and the Piśācas.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
