caucākī pāṇḍhara (चौचाकी पांढर).—f (The four-wheeled pāṇḍhara) The village-community; the whole village-body high and low. v miḷa, jama, gōḷā hō. The explication of this popular term is variously apprehended. With some the caucākēṃ or four wheels are dēśamukha, dēśapāṇḍyā, pāṭīla, kuḷakaraṇī. With others more ingenious or imaginative, the first cāka or wheel is sūrya, the second kumbhārācēṃ, the third tēlīcēṃ, the fourth gāḍyācēṃ (the circling sun, the evergoing machine of the potter, the indispensable mill of the oilman, and the business-doing cart). With others cynically disposed, caucākī pāṇḍhara alludes to the notorious subtlety and versatility of villagecommunities, ready to roll onward, backward, to the right, to the left, as expediency may suggest. With others, more sober and intelligent, the four Upholding and conducting wheels are 1st, sarakāra, 2nd, pāṭīla, kuḷakaraṇī, dēśapāṇḍyā dēśamukha, 3rd, mirāsa- dāra & śētakarī collectively, 4th, balutēdāra.
