General definition (in Jainism)
Source: academia.edu: Tessitori Collection ICaubīsadaṃḍakasūtra (चौबीसदंडकसूत्र) is the name of a work by Gajasāra dealing with the Cosmology of Jain Canonical literature.—The Caubīsadaṃḍakasūtra (with an interlinear Ṭabo) is included in the collection of manuscripts at the ‘Vincenzo Joppi’ library, collected by Luigi Pio Tessitori during his visit to Rajasthan between 1914 and 1919.—The Caubīsadaṃḍakasūtra is the longer version of the work which can have between 38 and 47 verses. The interlinear commentary on the first two verses is in Sanskrit, then shifts to Gujarati and in the final part combines Sanskrit, Gujarati and Hindi. Both the scribe of the main text and the scribe of the commentary name the author as Gajasāgara instead of Gajasāra as usually done. In the final part the commentary manages to give almost all the titles through which this work is known.
Jainism is an Indian religion of Dharma whose doctrine revolves around harmlessness (ahimsa) towards every living being. The two major branches (Digambara and Svetambara) of Jainism stimulate self-control (or, shramana, ‘self-reliance’) and spiritual development through a path of peace for the soul to progess to the ultimate goal.
