Cārugāmi (चारुगामि) or Cārugāmitā refers to “a beautiful stride” and represents the sixteenth of the “eighty secondary characteristics” (anuvyañjana) as defined in the Dharma-saṃgraha (section 83). The Dharma-samgraha (Dharmasangraha) is an extensive glossary of Buddhist technical terms in Sanskrit (e.g., cāru-gāmi). The work is attributed to Nagarguna who lived around the 2nd century A.D.
Cārugāmī (चारुगामी) refers to “pleasing gait” and represents the sixteenth of the eighty minor marks of distinction (anuvyañjana) mentioned in the Sukhāvatī and following the order of the Mahāvyutpatti (269-348). In Tibetan, the characteristic called Cārugāmī is known as ‘mdzes par gshegs pa’. The Sukhāvatī represents a prayer for rebirth which was composed by Karma chags med, a Karma bka’ brgyud master, who lived in the seventeenth century.
