bye brag pa'i rtsa ba sde bzhi (བྱེ་བྲག་པའི་རྩ་བ་སྡེ་བཞི) in Tibetan refers to the “Four Basic Schools” (of Vaibhāṣika).—Accordingly, [while discussing the Vinaya lineage in China]—Accordingly, [while describing the history of the Vaibhāṣika division of Śrāvaka philosophical systems]: Of the two Śrāvaka schools, the Vaibhāṣikas are known as Vaibhāṣikas (“Detailers”) because they follow the text called Ocean of Detailed Explanation or Great Detailed Explanation (Mahāvibhāṣā) and because they argue in detail that the three times are substantially existent. They are divided into four basic schools [bye brag pa'i rtsa ba sde bzhi] and eighteen sects.

Tibetan Buddhism includes schools such as Nyingma, Kadampa, Kagyu and Gelug. Their primary canon of literature is divided in two broad categories: The Kangyur, which consists of Buddha’s words, and the Tengyur, which includes commentaries from various sources. Esotericism and tantra techniques (vajrayāna) are collected indepently.
