Northern tradition of Buddhism generally referred to the date of Buddha nirvana (1865 BCE) as an epoch to count number of centuries elapsed and indicated a rough date of various Buddhist scholars. It may be noted that this epoch of Buddha nirvana did not become an era or a reckoning of time. It was just a reference point to count number of centuries elapsed.
