不拜 [bu bai]—Not Bowing—[Miscellaneous Notes (雜語 [za yu])] Those who have taken the Three Refuges (三歸 [san gui]) to become Upāsakas (優婆塞 [you po sai]) and Upāsikās (優婆夷 [you po yi]) must not worship the heavenly deities and earthly spirits (天神地祇 [tian shen de qi]) of other paths (餘道 [yu dao]). The lower scroll of the Brahmajāla Sūtra (梵網經 [fan wang jing]) states: "The rules for renunciants (出家人法 [chu jia ren fa]) are: not to bow to kings, not to bow to parents, not to revere the six relations (六親 [liu qin]), and not to bow to ghosts and spirits." Tang Yancong (唐彥悰 [tang yan cong]) compiled a six-volume work titled Collection of Matters Regarding Monastics Not Bowing to Lay People, etc. (集沙門不應拜俗等事 [ji sha men bu ying bai su deng shi]).
