伯俞泣杖 [bó yú qì zhàng] [bo yu qi zhang]—
During the Han Dynasty (漢朝 [han chao]), Han Boyu (韓伯俞 [han bo yu]) was disciplined by his mother. He cried because he felt his mother's physical strength weakening from the force of her blows. This account is found in Shuoyuan (說苑 [shuo yuan]), Volume 3, "Jianben" (建本 [jian ben]) by Liu Xiang (劉向 [liu xiang]) of the Han Dynasty (漢朝 [han chao]). Later, this story became an analogy for filial piety (孝順 [xiao shun]). Youxue Qionglin (幼學瓊林 [you xue qiong lin]), Volume 2, "Zu Sun Fu Zi Lei" (祖孫父子類 [zu sun fu zi lei]) states: "Boyu (伯俞 [bo yu]) cried at the cane because his mother was old." In Act 3 of Chen Mu Jiao Zi (陳母教子 [chen mu jiao zi]) by Guan Hanqing (關漢卿 [guan han qing]) of the Yuan Dynasty (元朝 [yuan chao]), it is written: "Your filial piety (孝順 [xiao shun]) is like Wang Xiang (王祥 [wang xiang]) lying on the ice (王祥臥冰 [wang xiang wo bing]); you are just like Boyu (伯俞 [bo yu]) crying at the cane."
