鞭春 [biān chūn] [bian chun]—
According to Chinese custom (中國習俗 [zhong guo xi su]), on the day before Lichun (立春 [li chun]), prefectural and county governments (州縣官府 [zhou xian guan fu]) in various places would whip the Spring Ox (春牛 [chun niu]) to welcome spring, praying for a good harvest. Song (宋 [song]) Dynasty, Meng Yuanlao's (孟元老 [meng yuan lao]) Dongjing Meng Hua Lu (東京夢華錄 [dong jing meng hua lu]), Vol. 6, "Lichun" (立春 [li chun]), states: "On the day before Lichun (立春 [li chun]), Kaifeng Prefecture (開封府 [kai feng fu]) brought the Spring Ox (春牛 [chun niu]) into the imperial palace and whipped it to welcome spring." This custom is also known as "Bianniu" (鞭牛 [bian niu]) or "Dachun" (打春 [da chun]).
