1. Informal, unrestricted essays or notes (筆記文章 [bi ji wen zhang]), not bound by a specific literary style (文體 [wen ti]). For instance, Shen Kuo (沈括 [chen kuo]) of the Song Dynasty (宋 [song]) authored Dream Pool Essays (夢溪 [meng xi]).

碧潭 [bì tán] [bi tan]—
1. A general term for a deep, emerald-green (碧綠色 [bi lu se]) pool (深潭 [shen tan]).
2. Name of a lake (湖泊 [hu po]). Located in the Xindian River (新店溪 [xin dian xi]) in New Taipei City (新北市 [xin bei shi]), its waters are deep and emerald-green (水深而碧 [shui shen er bi]), hence it is called "Bitan". Originally abundant in ayu (香魚 [xiang yu]), they later became rare due to changes in water quality (水質改變 [shui zhi gai bian]).
