bhīka (भीक).—f (bhikṣā S) Alms. Pr. bhikēcī haṇḍī śikyāsa caḍhata nāhīṃ. Pr. bhīka nakō paṇa kutrā āvara. 2 Want or lack. Ex. sarva gōṣṭīcī bhīka āhē. bhīka kāḍhaṇēṃ To suffer want; to know poverty. bhīka na ghālaṇēṃ (To refuse even charity unto.) To despise exceedingly. bhīka lāgaṇēṃ g. of s. To be in great demand; to be very scarce. bhīka lāgaṇēṃ with acc. of o. To be reduced to beggary. bhikēcā ḍōhaḷā. m A mean, low, beggarly (trick, act, desire) considered as a prognostic of approaching poverty. v lāga, aṭhava, hō. bhīka asūna daridra kāṃ Since you beg (i. e. consent to the place and work of a beggar) why yet are you poor (i. e. why beg at one door or at ten doors, when you might beg at a hundred)? bhikēvara lakṣya ṭhēvaṇēṃ To have an eye to beggary, i. e. to be indolent, unthrifty &c. bhikēvara śrāddha with karaṇēṃ or hōṇēṃ Shraddha made upon alms, i. e. poor or scanty shraddh. Hence fig. Any business conducted or work performed upon given or borrowed materials and in a poor way. Hence bhikēvara śrāddha kōṭhēṃ hōtēṃ? An exclamation in expression of one's conviction of any utter inadequacy or insufficiency.
