Bhāgānubandha (भागानुबन्ध) refers to one of the six classes (jāti) of combinations of Bhinna (“fractions”), which refers to one of the twenty operations (logistics) of pāṭīgaṇita (“science of calculation which requires the use of writing material—the board”), according to Pṛthudakasvāmī’s commentary on the Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta by Brahmagupta, a Sanskrit treatise on ancient Indian mathematics (gaṇita-śāstra) and astronomy from the 7th century.—Hindu treatises contain special rules for the reduction of classes [of numbers] (jāti) to proper fractions (bhinna). Śrīdhara and Mahāvīra each enumerate six jātis [e.g., Bhāgānubandha], while Brahmagupta gives only five and Bhāskara II following Skandasena reduces the number to four. The need for the division of fractions into classes arose out of the lack of proper symbolism to indicate mathematical operations.

The rule for bhāgānubandha according to Śrīdhara in the Triśatikā: “(i) In bhāgānubandha, add the numerator to the product of the whole number and the denominator. (ii) Multiply the denominator by the lower denominator and (then) the numerator by the same lower denominator increased by its own numerator”.
