Jyotisha (astronomy and astrology)
Source: academia.edu: Tessitori Collection I (astronomy)Bhaḍalī (भडली) refers to a corpus of texts that are somewhere between meteorological proverbs and pañcāṅga-like predictions and may be in verse (dūhās). They particularly deal with predictions relating to rain and are part of traditional knowledge, especially in Rajasthan and other Western Indian region. The principle of Bhaḍalī is to ‘describe ten chieftains (variables) responsible for the development of ‘ethereal embryo’ of rain. These where: wind, clouds, lightning, colors of the sky, rumbling, thunder, dew snow, rainbow and occurrence of orb around the moon and the sun. Bhadli considered the interactions of these variables with inter-planetary, stellar systems during each of the 12 lunar months to characterize rainfall patterns throughout the year’ (p. 348)
According to some, Bhaḍalī, the author, was a non-Brahmin lady (Gautam 350), according to others Bhaḍalī was an ‘astronomer (1000-1200 ce)’, but this statement is never substantiated. The name Bhaḍalī may occur with that of Sahadev (Maharashtra) or of Ḍakka/Ḍank (other regions). Bhadli astrology is traditionally used for rain predictions based on observations of nature and is claimed as useful by Indian meteorologists or environmentalists.
Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
