唄匿 [bei ni]—Baini — [Ritual] Also called bai (唄 [bei]) on a single day. Also called bazhi (婆陟 [po zhi]) or bashi (婆師 [po shi]). It is the chanting of Sanskrit sounds (梵音 [fan yin]). Drawing out the voice to chant gathas and hymns is for praising the merits and virtues of the Triple Gem (三寶 [san bao]), hence it is called baizan (唄讚 [bei zan]). When the Buddha was alive, there were those most skilled in the way of chanting, known as Bai Bhikkhu (唄比丘 [bei bi qiu]) or Lingsheng Bhikkhu (鈴聲比丘 [ling sheng bi qiu]). When Buddhism came to the Han territory (漢土 [han tu]), people did not know the melodies of chanting. Wei Chen Si Wang Cao Zhi (魏陳思王曹植 [wei chen si wang cao zhi]), while traveling in Yushan (魚山 [yu shan]), heard the sound of water in the rock valleys and felt inspired, thus he composed melodies. See the entry for Yushan (漁山 [yu shan]). Wen Ju Ji (文句記 [wen ju ji]) Volume 4 states: "The sutras say that bai is sometimes called baini, meaning praise and chanting." Xing Shi Chao (行事鈔 [xing shi chao]) Volume 4 states: "The Chu Yao Lü Yi (出要律儀 [chu yao lu yi]) says: 'Thus, the country of Yupi (鬱鞞國 [yu bing guo]) is translated as 'stopping and cutting off,' and also 'stopping and resting.' Because external conditions have ceased and been cut off, at that time, stillness is suitable for performing Buddhist rituals.'" Fa Hua Xuan Zan (法華玄贊 [fa hua xuan zan]) Volume 4 states: "In Sanskrit it is bazhi, here translated as praise. Baini is a corrupted form." Xuan Ying Yin Yi (玄應音義 [xuan ying yin yi]) Volume 14 states: "The Sanskrit word is bashi, here translated as praise. The term baini is suspected to be a corruption." Gao Seng Zhuan (高僧傳 [gao seng chuan]) Volume 13 states: "In the customs of India, any chanting of Dharma words is called bai. When it came to this land, chanting sutras was called zhuandu (轉讀 [zhuan du]), and singing praises was called fanbai (梵唄 [fan bei]). In ancient times, the devas' chanting was all set to rhythm with string and wind instruments. Since the five groups (五眾 [wu zhong]) were different from worldly customs, it was appropriate to use vocal melodies as excellent." Sa Po Duo Pi Ni Le Jia (薩婆多毘尼勒迦 [sa po duo pi ni lei jia]) Volume 6 states: "King Bimbisara (瓶沙王 [ping sha wang]) believed in Buddhism and went to the Buddha's abode, saying to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One! All external practitioners on the 8th, 14th, and 15th days gather in one place to chant and recite, gaining much alms and increasing their followers. I request the World-Honored One to permit the bhikkhus... (omitted) The Buddha said: 'I permit the bhikkhus to gather in one place on the 8th, 14th, and 15th days to chant and expound the Dharma.'" 背逆 [bèi nì] [bei ni]—
Rebellion (叛逆 [pan ni]). From Chapter 38 (第三八回 [di san ba hui]) of "A Brief History of Civilization" (《文明小史 [wen ming xiao shi]》): "You people, having mistakenly listened to rumors (谣言 [yao yan]), are about to commit such rebellious acts. What crime (何罪 [he zui]) do you deserve?"

背逆:叛逆。《文明小史》第三八回:「你們這些人誤聽謠言,就要做出這類背逆的事來,該當何罪?」

bèi nì: pàn nì. < wén míng xiǎo shǐ> dì sān bā huí: “nǐ men zhè xiē rén wù tīng yáo yán, jiù yào zuò chū zhè lèi bèi nì de shì lái, gāi dāng hé zuì?”

悖逆 [bèi nì] [bei ni]—
To violate the righteous way (違反正道 [wei fan zheng dao]) and commit insubordination and rebellion (犯上作亂 [fan shang zuo luan]).
《Book of Rites, Record of Music》 (禮記 [li ji].樂記 [le ji]): "Therefore, there arise hearts of perversity and deceit (詐偽 [zha wei]), and deeds of licentiousness (淫泆 [yin yi]) and rebellion (作亂 [zuo luan])."
《The Scholars》 (儒林外史 [ru lin wai shi]), Chapter 7 (第七回 [di qi hui]): "Good ministers (良臣 [liang chen]) and good assistants (良佐 [liang zuo]) suddenly become rebellious people."
