八埏 [bā shān] [ba shan]—
Remote lands in all directions (八方邊遠之地 [ba fang bian yuan zhi de]).
From Shiji (《史記 [shi ji]》), Volume 117 (卷一一七 [juan yi yi qi]), "Biography of Sima Xiangru" (司馬相如列傳 [si ma xiang ru lie chuan]): "The virtue of the Great Han (大漢 [da han]) gushes forth like a spring (原泉 [yuan quan]), flowing abundantly and spreading widely (沕潏漫衍 [mi yu man yan]), permeating and filling the four directions (旁魄四塞 [pang po si sai]), like clouds spreading and mist dispersing (雲尃霧散 [yun fu wu san]), reaching smoothly upwards to the nine heavens (九垓 [jiu gai]) and flowing downwards to the eight extremities of the earth." From Pei Yin's (裴駰 [pei yin]) Collected Explanations (集解 [ji jie]) during the Southern Dynasties Song (南朝宋 [nan chao song]): "'埏 [shan]' (yán) sounds like '延 [yan]' (yán), meaning the edge of the earth (地之際 [de zhi ji]). It states that [the text] means its virtue (德 [de]) reaches upwards to the nine layers of heaven (九重之天 [jiu zhong zhi tian]) and flows downwards to the eight boundaries of the earth (地之八際 [de zhi ba ji])."
bā shān: bā fāng biān yuǎn zhī de. < shǐ jì. juǎn yī yī qī. sī mǎ xiāng rú liè chuán>: “dà hàn zhī dé, féng yǒng yuán quán, mì yù màn yǎn, páng pò sì sāi, yún fū wù sàn, shàng chàng jiǔ gāi, xià sù bā shān.” nán cháo sòng. péi yīn. jí jiě: “shān yīn yán, de zhī jì yě. yán qí dé shàng dá yú jiǔ zhòng zhī tiān, xià liú yú de zhī bā jì yě.”
ba shan: ba fang bian yuan zhi de. < shi ji. juan yi yi qi. si ma xiang ru lie chuan>: "da han zhi de, feng yong yuan quan, mi yu man yan, pang po si sai, yun fu wu san, shang chang jiu gai, xia su ba shan." nan chao song. pei yin. ji jie: "shan yin yan, de zhi ji ye. yan qi de shang da yu jiu zhong zhi tian, xia liu yu de zhi ba ji ye."
