basaṇēṃ (बसणें).—v i (vasana S) To sit; to rest upon the buttocks, the knees, or the hams and heels. 2 To sit down; to perch; to roost; to rest as a beast or a bird. 3 To be without employment, occupation, or specific business: also to sit idling or dawdling. 4 To stand upon a pedestal. 5 To lie upon, lit. fig., and with amplitude of application. Ex. aṅgā- vara dhuḷa basalī; ammala prajāṃvara basalā; pēṭīsa paṭṭī basalī; raṅga basalā; mulāmmā-kalhaī-khaḷa-maḷa-basalā. 6 To rest as a weight or burden, esp. in figurative senses. 7 To settle, subside, sink to the bottom: also to sink, abate, go down;--as the water of a river or well. 8 To become blunt--an edge. 9 To settle in any course or state; to set in;--as rain, heat, fever. 10 To sink, retire, lose height or prominence. 11 To become expert or capable by use or practice; to get in--the hand or other member, a faculty, or the understanding. 12 To come upon, arise unto, fall on, in figurative senses; as māra basalā; kharca basalā; tōṭā basalā. 13 To fit; to be accommodated or adapted unto; to sit, suit, apply, answer, agree, tally--joints, junctures, devices, contrivances, calculations. 14 To fall; to be ruined--a trader or his business. 15 To become hoarse, or low and inaudible--the voice or kaṇṭha, gaḷā, ghasā, āvāja. 16 To be established or set up--a rule or sway. 17 To acquire fullness and strength--a crop: also to settle down as irrecoverably gone. basūṃ jāṇē tyālā uṭha kōṇa mhaṇē (Him who knows where and how to sit who will bid to rise?)
