包子 [bāo zi] [bao zi]—
1. A food made by wrapping filling with a dough wrapper and steaming it. Such as: "meat baozi" (肉 [rou]), "vegetable baozi" (菜 [cai]). Song Dynasty (宋 [song]) Luo Dajing (羅大經 [luo da jing]) in 'Helin Yulu Buyi' (鶴林玉露補遺 [he lin yu lu bu yi]) wrote: "There was a scholar-official (士大夫 [shi da fu]) who bought a concubine in the capital (京師 [jing shi]). She claimed to be from the baozi kitchen of Grand Tutor Cai's (蔡太師 [cai tai shi]) mansion. One day, he asked her to make baozi, but she refused, saying she couldn't." Yuan Dynasty (元 [yuan]) Zhou Mi (周密 [zhou mi]) in 'Wulin Jiushi' (武林舊事 [wu lin jiu shi]), Volume 6, 'Steamed Dishes and Side Foods' (蒸作從食 [zheng zuo cong shi]) wrote: "Steamed Dishes and Side Foods (蒸作從食 [zheng zuo cong shi]): 'large baozi' (大 [da]), 'various baozi' (諸色 [zhu se])."
2. An old term for a sealed packet of money, etc. Song Dynasty (宋 [song]) Cai Tao (蔡絛 [cai tao]) in 'Tieweishan Congtan' (鐵圍山叢談 [tie wei shan cong tan]), Volume 4, wrote: "According to ancestral custom, whenever an imperial prince (皇子 [huang zi]) or princess (公主 [gong zhu]) was born, the celebration was extravagant. There would be 'bath baby baozi' (浴兒 [yu er]), which were bestowed upon high-ranking officials (巨臣 [ju chen]) and imperial relatives (戚里 [qi li]). These baozi were all various items such as large and small gold and silver coins (金銀大小錢 [jin yin da xiao qian]), gilded golden millet fruits (金粟塗金果 [jin su tu jin guo]), rhinoceros horn jade coins (犀玉錢 [xi yu qian]), rhinoceros horn (犀玉 [xi yu]), and rhombus-shaped ornaments (方勝 [fang sheng])."

苞子 [bāo zi] [bao zi]—
An unopened flower bud (花蕾 [hua lei]). From Chapter One of The Scholars (《儒林外史 [ru lin wai shi]》): "In the lake were about ten lotus flowers (荷花 [he hua]), with clear water (清水 [qing shui]) dripping from their buds, and water droplets (水珠 [shui zhu]) rolling around on the lotus leaves (荷葉 [he ye])."
