Bandh (बन्ध्).—9 P. (badhnāti, babandha, abhāṃtsīt, bhaṃtsyati, banddhum, baddhaḥ; pass. badhyate)

1) To bind, tie, fasten; बन्द्धुं न संभावित एव तावत् करेण रुद्धोऽपि च केशपाशः (banddhuṃ na saṃbhāvita eva tāvat kareṇa ruddho'pi ca keśapāśaḥ) Kumārasambhava 7.57,25; R.7.9; Bhaṭṭikāvya 9.75.

2) To catch, capture, imprison, ensnare, make captive; कर्मभिर्न स बध्यते (karmabhirna sa badhyate) Bg 4.14; बलिर्बबन्धे (balirbabandhe) Bhaṭṭikāvya 2.39;14.56.

3) To chain, fetter.

4) To check, stop, suppress; as in बद्धकोप, बद्धकोष्ठ (baddhakopa, baddhakoṣṭha) &c.

6) To attract, arrest (as eyes &c.); बबन्ध चक्षूंषि यवप्ररोहः (babandha cakṣūṃṣi yavaprarohaḥ) Kumārasambhava 7.17; or बध्नाति मे चक्षुः (badhnāti me cakṣuḥ) (citrakūṭaḥ) R.13.47.

7) To fix or set upon, direct towards (as the eyes or mind), cast upon (with loc.); दृष्टिं लक्ष्येषु बध्नन् (dṛṣṭiṃ lakṣyeṣu badhnan) Mu.1.2; R.3.4;6.86; Bhaṭṭikāvya 2.22.

8) To bind or fasten together (as hair); पूर्णप्रतिज्ञेन मया केवल बध्यते शिखा (pūrṇapratijñena mayā kevala badhyate śikhā) Mu.7.17.

1) To put together, compose, construct (a poem, verse &c.); तुष्टैर्बद्धं तदलघु रघुस्वामिनः सच्चरित्रम् (tuṣṭairbaddhaṃ tadalaghu raghusvāminaḥ saccaritram) Vikr.18. 17; श्लोक एवास्त्वयं बद्धः (śloka evāstvayaṃ baddhaḥ) Rām.1.2.31.

11) To form, produce, bear (as fruit &c.); काले खलु समारब्धाः फलं बध्नन्ति नीतयः (kāle khalu samārabdhāḥ phalaṃ badhnanti nītayaḥ) R.12.69; Kumārasambhava 5.6. (v. l.) Ś.6.3.

12) To have, possess, entertain, cherish, feel.

13) To punish, chastise.

14) To offer, sacrifice (as an animal).

2) To display, exhibit, show. (The senses of bandh are variously modified according to the noun with which it is connected; e. g. bhrukuṭiṃ bandh to knit or bend the eyebrows, to frown; muṣṭiṃ bandh to clench the fist; añjaliṃ bandh to fold the hands together in supplication; cittaṃ, dhiyaṃ, manaḥ, hṛdayaṃ bandh to set the heart on; prītiṃ, bhāvaṃ, rāgaṃ bandh to fall in love with, be enamoured of; setuṃ bandh to construct or build a bridge; vairaṃ bandh to conceive hatred, contract enmity; sakhyaṃ, sauhṛdaṃ bandh to form friendship; golaṃ bandh to form a globe; maṇḍalaṃ bandh to form a circle, sit or stand in a circle; maunaṃ bandh to maintain silence; parikaraṃ, kakṣāṃ bandh to gird up one's loins, prepare oneself for any thing; see the compounds under baddha also). -Caus.
