Source: Scribd: Roots of YogaBālāliṅganāsana (बालालिङ्गनासन) is the name of an āsana (posture) described in the Haṭhābhyāsapaddhati (84).—Accordingly, “Stand while hugging one knee to the chest. This is the child embrace (bālāliṅganāsana)”.
The Haṭhābhyāsapaddhati is an 17th-century text in Sanskrit dealing with haṭha-yoga, and is also known by the name of its author, Kapālakuruṇṭaka. The text describes 112 āsanas (e.g., bāla-āliṅga-āsana) usually based on animal movement.
Yoga is originally considered a branch of Hindu philosophy (astika), but both ancient and modern Yoga combine the physical, mental and spiritual. Yoga teaches various physical techniques also known as āsanas (postures), used for various purposes (eg., meditation, contemplation, relaxation).
