百丈三日耳聾 [bai zhang san ri er long]—Baizhang Deaf for Three Days — A Gongan (公案 [gong an])
When Baizhang (百丈 [bai zhang]) revisited Mazu (馬祖 [ma zu]), the Patriarch saw him coming. He picked up the whisk (拂子 [fu zi]) from the corner of the meditation couch and held it up. Baizhang said, "Is this its function, or apart from its function?" The Patriarch hung the whisk back in its original place. After standing by for a moment, the Patriarch said, "In the future, what will you use to teach people?" Baizhang hung the whisk back in its original place. The Patriarch then let out a powerful shout (喝 [he]), and Baizhang experienced great enlightenment (大悟 [da wu]). Later, he told Huangbo (黃檗 [huang bo]), "At that time, I was so affected by Mazu's shout that I was deaf (耳聾 [er long]) for three days." Huangbo couldn't help but stick out his tongue in awe.
