百世師 [bǎi shì shī] [bai shi shi]—
Refers to a person whose scholarship (學問 [xue wen]) and conduct (品行 [pin xing]) are outstanding, and who serves as a model (表率 [biao lu]) for future generations (後世 [hou shi]). Song Dynasty (宋 [song]). Su Shi's (蘇軾 [su shi]) 《潮州韓文公廟碑 [chao zhou han wen gong miao bei]》 (Chaozhou Han Wengong Miao Bei): "An ordinary man (匹夫 [pi fu]) becoming a teacher for a hundred generations, and a single statement (一言 [yi yan]) becoming a law for all under heaven (天下法 [tian xia fa]) – these all have the means to participate in the transformations of heaven and earth (參天地之化 [can tian de zhi hua]) and influence the destiny of prosperity and decline (關盛衰之運 [guan sheng shuai zhi yun])." Ming Dynasty (明 [ming]). Lang Ying's (郎瑛 [lang ying]) 《七修類稿 [qi xiu lei gao]》 (Qī Xiū Lèi Gǎo), Volume 32, Poetry and Prose category, '茅誧詩 [mao bu shi]' (Máo Pú Shī): "A virtuous mother (母賢 [mu xian]) was once renowned for her 'three moves' teaching (三遷教 [san qian jiao]); a sagely son (子聖 [zi sheng]) now becomes a teacher for a hundred generations."
