百里傒 [bǎi lǐ xī] [bai li xi]—
A person's name (人名 [ren ming]). Courtesy name (字 [zi]) 井伯 [jing bo] (Jǐng Bó), a native of the State of 虞 [yu] (Yú) during the Spring and Autumn (春秋 [chun qiu]) period, his birth and death years are unknown (生卒年不詳 [sheng zu nian bu xiang]). After the State of 晉 [jin] (Jìn) destroyed the State of 虞 [yu] (Yú), 傒 [xi] (Xī) was captured (所虜 [suo lu]) by the people of 楚 [chu] (Chǔ). Duke Mu of Qin (秦繆公 [qin mou gong]) had long known of his reputation for wisdom (賢名 [xian ming]), and he redeemed (贖 [shu]) him with five sheepskins (五張羊皮 [wu zhang yang pi]) and bestowed upon him the office of 大夫 [da fu] (Dàfū). Therefore, he was also known as "五羖大夫 [wu gu da fu]" (Wǔ Gǔ Dàfū). See Shiji (《史記 [shi ji]》), Volume 5 (卷五 [juan wu]), "Annals of Qin" (《秦本紀 [qin ben ji]》). Also known as 百里奚 [bai li xi] (Bǎi Lǐ Xī).
百里傒：人名。字井伯，春秋虞國人，生卒年不詳。晉滅虞後，傒被楚人所虜，秦繆公素知其賢名，以五張羊皮贖之，並授以大夫之職，故也稱為「五羖大夫」。見《史記．卷五．秦本紀》。也稱為「百里奚」。
