柏拉圖 [bǎi lā tú] [bai la tu]—
Person's name. (Approx. 427-347 BC) Greek philosopher (希臘哲學家 [xi la zhe xue jia]). He studied philosophy under Socrates (蘇格拉底 [su ge la di]). The development of his doctrine proceeds from true knowledge (真知識 [zhen zhi shi]) to virtue (德行 [de xing]), based on the spirit of ignorance of knowledge (無知之知 [wu zhi zhi zhi]), centered on true immortal ideas (真實的不滅理念 [zhen shi de bu mie li nian]), forming idealist philosophy (理想主義哲學 [li xiang zhu yi zhe xue]). He also created dialectics (辯證法 [bian zheng fa]) and established the world of ideas (觀念世界 [guan nian shi jie]). Among his works, The Republic (《理想國 [li xiang guo]》) is the most widely popular (膾炙人口 [kuai zhi ren kou]).
