Bahvādi (बह्वादि).—A class of words headed by बहु (bahu) to which the fem. affix ई (ī) (ङीप् (ṅīp)) is added to form the feminine base; the words ending in अ (a) in this class take the fem. affix आ (ā) (टाप् (ṭāp)) in case ई (ī) which is optional, is not added; other words remain as they are, if ई (ī), is not added; e. g. बह्वी, बहुः (bahvī, bahuḥ); पद्धतिः, पद्धती (paddhatiḥ, paddhatī); गतिः (gatiḥ), _ गती (gatī); चण्डी, चण्डा (caṇḍī, caṇḍā); etc. cf. Kas. on P. IV. 1.45.

Bāhvādi (बाह्वादि).—A class of words headed by the word बाहु (bāhu) to which the tad. affix इ (i) (इञ् ()) is added in the sense of a descendant; e. g. बाहविः, पौष्करसादिः, पाञ्चिः (bāhaviḥ, pauṣkarasādiḥ, pāñciḥ) etc. The class called बाह्वादि (bāhvādi) is looked upon as आकृतिगण (ākṛtigaṇa) on the strength of the word च (ca) in the rule, so that similar words, not included in the class, could be explained; cf. Kas. on P.IV.1.96.
