He was a pupil of Mahatissa,, and when the latter was expelled by the Maha vihara monks for misdemeanour, Bahalamassu Tissa left the Maha vihara in anger and, dwelling in Abhayagiri, formed there a separate faction. Mhv.xxxiii.96.
